Coat of arms of the city of Poltava

The Poltava coat of arms embodies the continuity of national symbolism given to the city as one of the regimental administrative centers of the Ukrainian Cossacks during the time of Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Poltava used this coat of arms for over 100 years.

The basis of the coat of arms is the city heraldic shield, the configuration of which was taken from the image of the coat of arms of Poltava at the beginning of the Poltava city magistrate in the 1700s.

The field of the shield is purple (crimson), which corresponds, according to heraldry, to the planet Mercury and the natural stone amethyst, symbolizing dominion, dignity, generosity, piety.

In the center of the shield, exactly behind its central axes, there is a golden bow - a symbol of military weapons. Its bowstring is stretched with an arrow (which means readiness for battle), directed with the tip downwards, symbolizing the protection of peaceful labor.

The military paraphernalia is surrounded on four sides by golden guards - six-pointed stars, symbolizing the four cardinal points: north, south, east and west.

The composition is crowned by a golden inscription "Poltava" in a stylized Old Slavic font, with the letter "T" depicted in the form of a heraldic cross, which overshadows the coat of arms.
